Joe and Richard and other Blue Woo'ers....to move back the history
somewhat...Marie Woo was using this glaze at the University of Washington
in the mid 60's.....She moved to Seattle, from the Detroit
Area (Cranbrook Art Academy specifically......connection to Howard
Kottler in his first years at the Univ. of W.)to become an Artist in
Residence at the U.of W. Howard Kottler (pre-LF work) and students at
the U. used this glaze extensively and took it throughout the world.

......and so like so many of our "favorite" glazes this glaze flourished
in and near many academic environments ...throughout the United
States.....changing often quite radically given the variety of local chemical
resources......one of my favorite personal antecdotes: in the late 60's
as a student I was in Montana working with Dave Shaner for a summer. One
day Dave asked me if I would share the formula for a red glaze that I was
using.....The Glaze was in my notebook titled " Shaner's Red" The formula
was only remotely close to Dave's original formula.....
Somewhere around my shop I have an old notebook that has twelve different
formulas which claim to be the "Original Shaner's Red".....perhaps one is
a great Chili recipe!

Take Care!
