Don,

How much glass should one use? Do you use it with or without glaze?

The easiest way to get glass "crushed" is to heat it and plunge it into
water.

I take it to about 1100 - 1200 degrees pull it out of the kiln with pliers
or tongs and into a bucket of water. The glass instantly becomes a mass
of cracks and granules. Sometimes it will fall apart and sometimes hold its
shape. All you have to do is put it into a mortar and lightly crush to
separate the grains. ( Coffee can and hammer, etc. also work well ) Sift to
size the particles...and voila...crushed glass.

( I like to put all the glass into a container and rinse with water a few
times. Wash until the water isn't milky looking any more. Not necessary but
it can help to give "cleaner" colors when being used.)

Wear safety glasses when doing the water plunge and especially when mortar
crushing...some glass bits like to jump. Be careful if you're using a
plastic bucket. If the glass is still too hot and drops to the bottom, it
will melt a hole. I just put an old plate in the bottom of the pail for
insurance. Or use a metal container.
