John,
Sounds like you need some post fire oxidation. Lift the lid after
a couple of minutes and let the paper reignite. Cover again and let cool.
Also, if you don't get enough secondary air to your burners the kiln is
operating in reduction which will affect the glaze. I keep my burners
about 2 inches outside the kiln to get enough air. Each kiln is different
so play around to find what works best for yours. Good luck
