I have a potter friend in Ohio...a pro for many years, who has suddently
experienced problems with his copper red glaze. I told him about ClayArt.
He has no computer and asked me to ask if there were any "great copper red
recipes out there." I suspect there are. In the words of Raggedy Andy,
about eleventy seventy hundred. We have 3 in our studio. In any case, it
would be fun to send him all the information I get. Maybe the results will
convince him to get a computer.

One of the 'Copper Reds' that I have used most consistantly with good
results, is one which from my reading seems to be credited to Both Tom
Coleman and Brisson.

COPPER RED Cone 9.
Neph Syn. 42.35
Whiting 10.46
Kaolin 02.04
Silica 22.70
Gerstley Borate 13.27
Pot. feld. 09.18
Tin Oxide 01.70
Copper Carb. 00.26

I fire this glaze to cone 10 just tipping. If over-fired the red starts
to burn out. The glaze is a strong RED, which under heavy reduction and
where it is thick tends toward an oil spot effect. Be careful with thick
application at the bottom of the piece, as there is a fine point at the
end of the firing where the glaze tends to run. Presistance with this
glaze is well worthwhile.

Where I am about to unload a kiln with 100 tests looking at Coefficient of
Thermal Expansion variations.
