Not as good as the new Orton controller - the one with the two pyrometers -
one for the top and the other for the botton - never more than one degree
difference top to bottom all the way up - and the same on the way down for
whatever segment you want.

This is the electric kiln technology we have all been waiting for folks.

Ron,
Am curious as to how this controller works. Does it actually differentiate
between the various sections of the kiln? How? A kiln with three sections
would require a third zone device? How does it compensate for lower
impedence in older elements??

Very curious to hear more about this Orton Controller

It has more than one thermocouple located in different sections of the kiln.
It only controlls the heat in its zone.

Hi Alex,

There are two pyrometers on mine - one for the top and the other for the
bottom. The controller simply takes the two different temperatures and
tries (and does an excellent job I should add) to keep the two zones
increasing , holding and, if you you want, cooling, to keep those two zones
the same temperature. Has nothing to do with how slow or fast your kiln
fires. It puts power to the bottom or top set of elements at different
amounts buy having separate contacts which switch on and off at different
times.

This is not as easy as I thought it was going to be - to explain how it works.

Let me put it this way - if the controller senses a difference in
temperature between the top and bottom - lets say the bottom is cooler - it
will leave the bottom elements on longer. You can see the difference
between the two zones by using the special options part of the program. You
can also see the difference between the top and bottom as the kiln cools
using the advanced options.

If you wanted to slow down from 700 to 600 with a cooling ramp - the
controller would first even out the two zones and then drop at the rate you
have chosen - keeping the two zones the same.

You can get it with 3 pyrometers if you want - for more money of course. If
I am not mistaken - I think you could get it with 2 pyrometers with the
option of adding another - better check that out though. I would think if
the bottom and top were the same temperature - the middle would be the same
- I guess it depends on how tall the kiln is and how well insulated.

As I said - this is what those who fire in electric kilns have been waiting
for - at an affordable price - this kind of technology has been around but
it has cost too much for studio potters up till now. The cones on the
bottom of this kiln bend the same amount as those anywhere else.
