Hello:

I will be in Colorado Springs from Sept 19 to Sept 22nd and would love to
see what is happening, clay-wise in that area (including Boulder and
Denver). Any ideas?

I am a novice potter. Handbuilding only. Been working with colored clay
exclusively. Cone 5.

I was just in Colorado Springs July 27-Aug 1.

I didn't find very much ceramics but one: Van
Briggle pottery on US 24 just west of town going
to Pikes Peak highway. They have a self
guided tour through the factory which starts with
a wheel demonstration. Most of the pieces are
made from molds. The hydraulic tile press is a
must see in operation.

In Manitoba Springs (sp?) also on US 24 past
Van Briggle, the shopping area is spotted with
interesting shops. Best ceramics is at Filthy
Eula's (or some such women's name). If the
woman jeweler with long blonde hair is working,
tell her the guy from DC is very happy with the
sun face.

Besides these, the rock formations are
fascinating and definitely relate to the clay
make-up. We went to Fluorescent National
Park (further out on US 24 about 20 miles).
The petrified red woods and explanation of
sedimentary rock are great.

Have a good time; it's a beautiful place. We
stayed in Cascade so the things I mention
above are all close by.

Hi Eydie,

Try the Business of Art Center in Manitou Springs. It's a nice co-op
studio at the base of Pikes Peak.

Tell them Paul sent you.

Paul, now in Morgantown WV

I'll be in Colorado Springs November 4-7 and would appreciate any
information about clay exhibits, shows, galleries, or events
(pottery-related or not) that might be of interest to me during my first
visit to Colorado Springs. Thanks.

Bob just down the main st. from cs is Manitou springs. There is a business
of the arts center there. SOme studio space plus gallary sales. Greg
Marshall also has a studio in town and is sometimes on the list. There is
an old pot and tile making facility in Colo springs that is open to the
public I am going blank on their name. If there is time a trip to boulder
has a number of gallaries and I always enjoyed going there while visiting m=

Hi Greg,
Be sure to check out the Van Briggle factory.... great pots and history =3D
of the factory which to my knowledge is still running.
http://www.vanbriggle.com/
Also there was a Tesla Museum that I understand was disbanded and his =3D
inventions were auctioned off in 2000. Apparently some of his best =3D
inventions were made there.
When we lived in CO I was in a Manitou Springs co-op called Filthy =3D
Wilma's on 10 Ruxton Ave. I'm not sure it's still there. It was a quirky =
=3D
studio. The road that takes you to the train ride up Pikes Peak which =3D
is very impressive just be cautioned about the altitude sickness you =3D
might experience at 14000ft elevation.=3D20
Also the Garden of the Gods is a fabulous natural wonder =3D

Have fun.

Liz - I'm wondering if you are thinking of the Van Bringle (sp?) pottery pr=
oduction house in CS?
