I purchased a small Skutt Kiln in 1966 to be used for bisque firing only.
At the time of purchase I ordered a spare set of coils. I HAVE NOT HAD TO
USE THEM. I have fired that kiln hundreds of times, but I have never gone
above cone 07. That should help those of you who inquire often about( how
long do coils last?) When you fire long periods of time above cone 3 the
kiln and coils take a beating... Our school kilns (big Skutts) loaded often
by students and helpers would last about 5 years, with repeated coil
changes. My little Skutt loaded only by me, fired by me, and given great
care looks and fires the same today as it did in 1966. AND I MAKE A LOT OF
POTS.

ps...those of you that fire cone 8-9 in electric are often trapped into
numerous coil changes and kiln repair, but i think that is just part of the
cost of doing business....learn to do your own coil changes, follow good
procedure, clean pots, clean shelves, clean kiln.

Mel,

Glad to see that non-school kilns last a long time with some care. I thought
they should but haven't been doing long enough to know, and anyway an
electrician I'm not. But I've known others who say that their kilns need little
care, and they've never changed the elements. The one at the school where
I teach has been there I know more than ten years, and the elements have not
been changed. Works fine.

It's after one in the morning and for whatever reason I can't sleep. So I'm
taking
email time tonight...

Take care.

Dear Bob,

all you need to do is to tell people to first taper the ends of a =
fattish proto coil (this stops the hollowing at the ends, and to press =
from the centre outwards using an initial bit of oomph and make sure =
that the coil is made to roll through more than its circumference - this =
is what keeps it round, make sure that the coil is kept mobile.

happy potting from Marek http://www.moley.uk.com=20
