I have a student that fires spherical rattles up to 8 inches in
diameter in raku. We have never had one explode during the firing,
but I do have a couple of tips:

Do not try to cool them in water

Where good shoes, not sandles, the slippery things tend
to escape the tongs from time to time and role around
the students feet

Be sure to glaze 24 hours in advance and preheat in warming
kiln or on top of raku kiln

Good Luck,

I would like to know if you are rakuing these all glazed or with many
unglazed portions. If you are glazing how do you keep it from sticking to
the shelf?

Thanks,

Kristine
