Rafael,
I believe lead was often used in trade to bump up the weight of salt
as well. I recall reading that when Roman recipes were tested by 20th
century researchers that the amount of salt made the dishes unbearably
salty, one of the side affects of lead poisoning apparently being that
one cannot taste salt.
