clay issues

I've been reading and hearing some of the concerns over clay body
contaminations/impurities etc.etc. and I thought I'd offer the following
short thought. Detail can be found through the link on my web side or at:

http://www.ceramicsoftware.com/education/clay/kaplan1.htm

You paid, you bought and you used. It works or it doesn't. If it doesn't,
hard and quick its tough darts. If it does, consider your self lucky. Most
wet/dry clay blenders don't test their raw materials, or even any fired
samples. Suck it up and move on and stop whining. Its the nature of the
product/business.

User problems are easy to diagnose and solve. Problems with clay mining
and actions further down the processing/manufacturing line are more
difficult to correct.

Simple solution? There really is none other than:

1. Use only white/grey burning clays.
2. Avoid fireclays like the plague. Same with high Goldart bodies
3. Make your own clay, seive where necessary.
4. Blunge your clay into a slip. Screem via a Sweco. Dewater via a filter
press, then pug and enjoy theb est clay you ever used.
5. Accept no expectations with premade wet/dry clays and landfill the
culls, enjoy the remainders of the firsts, hope it doesn;t hapen again.
6. Find http://www.ceramicsoftware.com/education/clay/kaplan1.htm
7. Accept the nature of the process and the materials.
8. Stop whining. or get a real job.
9. Above all, have a sense of humor.
10. Don't take your self too seriously!

Jonathan - I've been told I have some particular "attitudes" -
mainly no patience w/ seeking "redtn. looks" in OX. But you leave
me in the shade! I LOVE IT! (We're you ever a Marine?!)

I agree w/ you 100%.

Once qn - what is a Sweco & (if you quickly know & it's not
obvious) in whose catalog do I find it? I follow your method
but dry on plaster - hard to fit a filter press into 200 sq ft.
For those who have no claymixer access, Bruce Gholson has a
method of making using lg. farm watering (?) tanks.

TIA Karen Gringhuis

A Sweco is a vibratory screening unit. Very expensive new, I bought mine
used for a grand. 18" diam 60 mesh screen, all stainless steel. Looks like
R2D2 from Starwars fame. Can have multiple decks for levels of particle
reduction. Bes tused for wet materials. Standard equipment in the process
industry. We seive our bulk slips via diaphragm pumsp through the Sweco in
record time.

Enjoyed talking with you. I'll post you the results.

Jonathan:
Sure, I'd be interested in your base glazes and also the % pigment you
found to be the most appealing
