chlorides as part of the raku process

Hi Everybody from the Craft Guild in Dallas, Texas.

I am starting a new process of using spray-on chlorides during reduction on
raku pieces getting some very fine results using an iron based
chloride...this technique provides some very nice ambers to burgundy's....I
am currently looking for information on other clorides that will produce
different colors.

Anybody have any interesting ideas?

Could you provide more deteil about the chloride addition
process... at what point is the spray applied, what temp, how
reduced, to what surface is the spray applied (glazed, unglazed,
over oxides,etc.)

thanks...Loran Hill

I used to spray stannous chloride and ferrous chloride onto the
Raku ware as it was quickly going from the kiln to the can for
reduction. Stannous chloride gives rainbow luster. However, all
chlorides should be considered toxic. Use with great caution.

Jay your process and results sound really interesting. I would like to
know how do you get iron based chlorides? We really suffer a dearth of
new ideas here in the boondocks. I will be glad to get any information
possible. Kind regards Ralph from Port Elizabeth South Africa.

Could you please explain when you are spraying on chlorides in the raku
process? It sounds interesting

I dissolved ferrous chloride (gold luster) and stannous chloride
(rainbow luster) into water in a spray bottle and squirt the pieces
when they come from the raku kiln on the way to the post reduction
chamber. Between kiln loads, rinsed the sprayer mechanism because this
solution seems to ruin the sprayer mechanism. It is a toxic
solution and I don't use it anymore.
