I lived in Chengdu for a year in 1992. I tried unsuccessfully to find
working potteries. People didn't seem to grasp the idea of studio
pottery since so much pottery production in China is factory produced.
I did visit a couple of village potteries outside of the city. Some
Chinese friends took me and I have no idea how to tell you where they
were. After a while I gave up on looking for potteries and just focused
on learning about the great local pottery made during the Song dynasty.
In Chengdu the Sichuan University Museum and the Sichuan Provincial
Museum both have pottery from Liulichang, a Song folk kiln. The kiln
produced some very interesting wares. Chengdu had a high level of
culture. After the fall of the Tang dynasty the Tang court fled to
Chengdu and during the Southern Song dynasty Chengdu was was one of two
book publishing centers; the other place being Hangzhou. Even though
far away from the centers of power in China Chengdu potters were aware
of the major artistic trends and this is reflected in their work.
Generally very crude vessels but with really great painting.

Finally i am on a pay to use computer in the porcelain capital of china. the trip has been fabulous! shanghai and then the conference in yixing --we were honored guests, chaufered around in an air condition bus. walked to the top of the yellow mountain area.
i am now a t-pot collector.
the sdlide presentations by richard notkin, matt kelleher, jason, david furman and many others. My presentation is on my website, too. the group was very well received. the main question from the students at Jingdezhen art school is: why do you have to make a sculpture a t-pot?certainly a hot topic with the functional potters. Po is a good tour guide. we have seen several ancient kilns. I even got to throw today at the porcelain history site.
we haven't even made it to Xian yet!
People are wonderful. and the other potters are great. i actually knew a few of them from other trips and the clayart (of Course).
to day we went shopping for decals - fred paget has a great little language computer. and barbara brown sends her regards.
Bonita in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of china!

Gang: Several people have e-mailed me off list to ask about coming to China.
I have no interest in WVA but i think it is a great way to experience China.
It's $5000 US for 6 weeks from end of May to first of
August all inclusive( that air, all ground tranportation, accomodation,
food( and it is delicous), clay, firing, the whole shebang. It works out to
about 3 weeks in the studio working and with throwers, trimmers, decorators
etc brought to the Jingdezhen Ceramic Center for you to watch. If you are
like me you need to work. you can't sit on a bus each day. The people here
are amazingly helpful and you'll luv them. You may not need them or want
them but you also get 6 credits for undergrad or grad. hang them on your
wall. You'll see things in Chian you couldn't possibly get to otherwise.
contact Bob Anderson for more info- bob.anderson@mail.wvu.edu Let him know
he should be on Clayart- show our numbers.
yesterday 278 people visited my blog- thanx.Sheila said to get it up over
300 on the weekend I would have to post a pic of my room mate Trevor in the
buff. I couldn't do that but I did post how the women are throwing off their
pants and turning their heads for the young undergrad Bobby Free.
Off to the big vase factory this aft. I'll put up pics of that tomorrow. For
now you'll have to be happy with
Bobby.
All the best,
Tony
