I have a friend who is relocating to Chicago and fears he won't be able to
find an outlet for his clay hobby there. I bet him a dinner that you all
could come up with some options for classes and/or workshops and/or studio
spaces that I can pass on to him. You can e-mail me directly
(KLoehmer@juno.com) or send a reply here. My stomach & I thank you in
advance!!!

Dear Kathy - YOU WIN...or....is he nuts??! Depending on where he lives,
start W/ Lill St. Studios owned & operated by Bruce Robbins - lincoln
Park N side of Chicago. Evanston Art Center - classes. Take a class
& pay for open studio time. If he's pretty good & pretty serious, he maywant to apply for membership (if space is open) at Midwest Clay Guild
in Evanston. Northfield Pottery in Northfield. Highland Park City Park
District runs a small program at West Ridge Center w/ some open studio
hours. If he or you want to write me privately (or, ohmigod pickup the
phone!) I can fill you in on details & give you a list of names who might also h
classes too, on Davis or Church St. in Evanston. All these ideas are
near north or N suburbs. If he's going to locate elsewhere, we can also
generate names & leads into other areas. He'll love Chicago. and what
on earth am I doing in Alfred wher it just snowed?? Good luck & let me
know how he makes out. Karen Gringhuis

Hi Kathy,
Perhaps your friend could find studio space and facilities at Lill Street.
The address is:
1021 W. Lill
Chicago, IL 60614
773-477-6185

This is a pretty cool place. They rent studio space to potters, allow them
to use the firing facilities and also teach others to throw pots. They also
have a gallery where a number of their potter's works are sold. If they
can't help you, maybe they can refer you elsewhere. Good luck.

OK:

LILL Street in Chicago on the northsides has classes and studio space.
There are numerous artist coops around the city that list in the Reader which is
also on the internet. You can live and work in the same building. There is the
Art Institute in Chicago, Northwestern University in Evanston and much more.
Or if you are like me and have an apartment with a good landlord and a back
insulated porch, you set up your studio there and fire someplace else.

I can get numbers for all these places if anyone interested would email me.
I know this has been posted on the list before.
