Clayarters :

If any of you are traveling through the central Texas area there's plenty of
clay to see.

You may have read fellow clayarter, Pat Chesney, describe the studio at
Heritage Farms in Elm Mott. I highly recommend a visit to the Farm. They
have an impressive operation. I was particularly interested in the salt and
wood kilns. They also have an excellent line of oxidation fired ware. In
addition to the pottery there is a woodworking studio, blacksmith shop, and
other crafts.

Down the road in Waco is Baylor University. Paul McCoy is the ceramics
professor. They have an excellent clay studio. Paul's currently building a
catenary arch salt/soda kiln.

About an hour south of Waco on I-35 a former classmate of mine, Jim Dale,
operates a studio and showroom in Salado. IMHO, Jim is one of the finest
functional potters in the state. Beautifully designed and superbly crafted
high-fire stoneware. Jim is an alum of the ceramics program at the
University of North Texas in Denton.

Between Salado and Austin, in Georgetown, you'll find Patrick Veerkamp at
Southwestern U. Patrick has a beautiful and well-equipped studio. A year
and half ago Jack Troy was down to build a salt kiln. More recently, Jason
Hess had an exhibition and conducted a wood-burning kiln construction
workshop.

Carole :

My idea of central Texas is the area between Dallas and Austion. IMHO,
Greune would be more appropriately described as being in the Hill country.
This is the area between Austin in the north, San Antonio in the south, and
Fredericksburg in the west.

This area is a haven for artists including potters like Dee Buck. Frank
Campbell, a former apprentice of Michael Leach, also has a pottery in
Greune. It's called Dos Rios Pottery.
