calcined and uncalcined zinc oxide

Years ago I moved west and switched from uncalcined Zinc Oxide from
Minn. Clay to calcined. All the texts I've read have indicated that
calcined is superior, but my reliable glaze began to pinhole. When I
switched back to the uncalcined, the glaze was okay. The uncalcined is
"Phillips process." Anybody have similar experience, or know amazing
technical facts related?
