Hi--I am trying to get an idea from a potters prospective of how effective
is advertising on the Internet? I would appreciated any information you
potters might have on this topic---thanks.....Marshall

>Marshall-I asked the same question last spring and got many different
responses. Our experience has been very good. We have a retail shop and
let all of our customers know about our site. You can't depend on search
engines (only) to let people know about your site. We have had people
from out of state come in to our shop as a result of researching North
Carolina, pottery, clay, etc. They all spent money and said the reason
for showing up in our shop was because of finding our web site. We have
had many requests to sell our work through our site, but it isn't on a
secure server, yet. The most important thing to remember is to consider
this as only one aspect of your total advertising scheme.
Good luck-

I have had a pretty comprehensive web site up for a little over a month. Part
of the site includes prices in a catalogue format inviting wholesale and or
retail sales. I also have a 28 page exhibition catalogue for sale through the
site. It is early days yet but so far no nibbles. I have had some nice
feedback and the site is still in the process of being "promoted" so it will
be a few months before I have a very clear idea of it's value.

My expectation is that it will be an excellent way to dispense information
about my work and what I do. I don't expect much in the way of direct sales.
What I would like most from the site is feedback from people who visit the
site. I'd like the site to give my work more exposure and I hope to get a
sense of connection with a larger audience through it.

I highly recommend the person who designed and formatted my site. He is a
highly regarded metalsmith who has developed a skill and passion for building
web sites. His sites are very clean and simple, load quickly and look great.
If you are interested in getting him to do a site for you you can contact him
at:

His name is Andrew Goss

As I said, he designed our site which is at:

His rates are reasonable and he's very good to work with.

I have gotten 2 jobs through my page in the 5 months that it's been up. I
didn't think that sounded like much, but my fiance who created the page for
me says that's a good response for being up such a short time.
