Does anyone know where Bruce Dehnert is hanging it hat lately? He's an old
friend from Wyoming and taught me the "art of pit pots" -- and how to keep
the fire department from unloading thousands of gallons of water on a
couple hundred pots (because we didn't have some little 'ol permit). He's
from Lander, Wyoming. Last I heard -- he was in New Zealand, via Hunter
College. If anyone knows his address, etc. -- please contact me. Thanks.

When it comes to visits from the fire department I have found that their
visits often depend on your relationship with your neighbors and even then
some people have nothing better to do than complain even when they are not
being bothered. The reason I am aware of this is one of our fireman is a
potter and must respond to calls made and at times have to inforce laws that
are on the books even when they are rediculous just because they are pushed
by some busy body with nothing better to do.

Lori Wilkinson in Roswell NM who just salvaged pots after being doused half
way through a "Pit" firing, fact is they were just what I wanted. So in
reality she did me a favor by calling the fire dept. Won't push my luck though.

I don't know how well this will work other places, but both in the little
island community where I did pit fires and at the college, I just called
them up and forewarned them that there would be smoke for a while. They
knew what I was doing, so let me alone. Of course, cities are not so likely
to be indulgent. I also
worked out what it would be legal and ordinary to be burning, and told them
that was the fuel. In Texas people barbecue with mesquite a lot, and there
is often smoke at the beginning. I would add a few mesquite logs, (a very
distictive odor) and Voila!
Nobody tells a Texan they can't barbecue........
