I am looking for a particular book on kiln building. A local pottery studio
has a catenary arch kiln that needs to be totally rebuilt, utilizing whatever
materials that are salvageable. It was built from detailed plans contained in
a kiln book that I last saw in the early 70's. ( I can't remember the books
name or the author.) To help zero in on the book --- it told how to make a
template for the arch by using a draped chain , where the ends of the chain
represent the width of the bottom of the walls; also how to make burners out
of pipe fittings( maybe not the best idea); and which arch bricks to use
where.
The person(s) who built the kiln are long gone and even though I have built 2
of these kilns, it has been a good 20 years and my memory needs some
refreshing. Any help in finding this book would be very helpful. Thanks.

Our local library has the second edition of "The Kiln Book" by Frederick
L. Olsen. It has lots of details on building fuel fired kilns(a little
bit of information on building electric ones). He has all the details
for building arches, also burner specifications. Really good reference
material. This second edtion was published in 1982. -Luther

Sounds like it could be Daniel Rhodes book "Kilns Design, Construction and
Operation". The ISBN number is 0-8019-7064-4

It was first published in 1968 by Chilton Book Company.

Good luck!

Don't know the book you're referring to. You have a couple options.

A. Contact the Ceramic Book and Literature Service, Marietta, Ohio
B. Get a copy of the Harbison-Walker Refractories Handbook. It doesn't
have any specific plan for any kiln/furnace, but all the information
necessary to designing a parabola can be found there.

Ed- I think the book must have been "Kilns", by Daniel Rhodes. On about
page 111, he shows the use of a chain for making the catenary shape, and at
about page 215, he shows making a kiln, using such an arch. The
construction photos give some idea of the brick choices.

The book is pretty good, but infuriating, because there are long stretches
without ANY page numbers.

The edition I have is from 1968, and has a Library of Congress Cat No. of
68-57512.

By the way, if you are seriously contemplating such a kiln, look at the web
page recently put out by Jim Shepard and the school at Fresno. They used
castable refractory, Rammed. look at :
www.mpgallery.com/kiln/kiln.htm
( I hope it is still there.)

Dear Ed,
This sounds awfully like Dan Rhodes book: Kilns, Design construction and
Operation. Now out of print in the UK, don't know about anywhere else.
I'm sure there must be a 2nd hand book dealer out there, or a library,
or someone with a copy who could fax or s-mail you the bits you need. If
you draw a blank Stateside I have the book and a fax.

The book referred to can be only one of two titles; Kilns by Dan Rhodes or
most likely The Kiln Book by Fred Olsen. Kilns is out of print and has been
for some time. The Kiln Book was written in 1973 and revised in 1983. You
probably remember the 1973 first edition of the book. It was a soft cover
published by Keramos Books.

The more recent edition is being reprinted so you might have a hard time
finding it right now. We are out of stock but will be getting a shipment as
soon as the reprint is completed.

I have been searching for the hardcover "Illustrator's
Reference Manual", published by Chartwell. It includes
photos of nude models in various poses for sculpting
purposes.

I've tried half.com, buy.com and amazon.com as well as
book stores without success.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

(By the way, I very much enjoy the people and shared
feedback offered through this site.)

Hope to hear back soon.

Gail, go to http://www.alibris.com and search by title and publisher. They
list four "Illustrator's Reference Manual" from Chartwell - one states
"nudes" and one states "figures" priced from $17.50 to $47.00.

Gail,

Go to my Potter's Portal page on my website at http://www.mypots.com

Look in the "Books" Section and you'll find "AddAll Book Search". This will
search a lot of online bookstores both new and used (you can choose which).
I found LOTS of references for your book. It will also compare prices.

By the way, I've found at least 1 or 2 copies of almost every book mentioned
on Clayart at this site. Haven't bought them but just look for fun.
