I am beginning an independent study in glaze chemistry. Any suggestions
for "must read" books? Thanks!

Susan,

Richard Zakin's "Ceramics Mastering the Craft" has good general
information about each of the ceramic chemicals and their functions in
glazes. Zakin also gives some practical guidelines for developing balanced
glazes. I use Daniel Rhodes "Clay and Glazes for the Potter" as a general
reference book, it's packed with information.

I would also suggest that you invest in one of the glaze calculation
software programs (Hyperglaze, Insight, GlazeChem). These programs help you
to analyze what is happening when you put text book knowledge to use making
glazes.

Good Luck,

"Ceramic Technology for Potters & Sculptors" by Yvonne Hutchison Cuff is an
excellent reference book. Sells for $24.95
"Clay and Glazes for the Potter" by Daniel Rhodes is another one and sells for
$31.95. Another great beginner book is "Ceramics, Mastering the Craft" sells
for $22.95. I hope this helps. Carol Tague If you would like to know where
to get these books pleas e-mail: megtague@msn.com

Hi.
I'm a brand new subscriber. (first post!)

The book I first learned glaze calc on was:
_Ceramics Handbook_ by Charles McKee, 1984, Star Publishing, Belmont
CA.

It went out of print for a while, but has been re-issued, i think. I still refer
to it today. It's quite good.
