My mother-in-law, who lives in Santa Barbara, CA believes she read that
Beatrice Wood past away last week. Six or seven years ago I was at
Beatrice's studio with my in-laws, since then they have paid attention to
that name in the news.

Gary Wang or any others in the area, can you confirm this?

hi, I can confirm Bill's post that
Beatrice is well. I asked someone

Please stop spreading this rumor.

Did you catch Beatrice Wood on the Today Show this morning?

What a lady!

She said "My mind is clearer now than when I was 40 or 50."

Something to look forward to???

For you west coast people, it was on about 8:45ish. (I thought I'd post
it, although our messages often don't get on Clayart until much later, so
this will probably be too late -- but I thought it was worth a try.)

I never watch the Today Show, but I saw a trailer last night that showed her,
so I watched it this morning waiting....and waiting...for her. That was a
neat segment. All three of those people looked great. Sometimes we get all
caught up in being 40 or 50 and how OLD we feel! I liked her remark about
age not being a reality (or something like that) and she's only 52! That's a
good philosophy to adopt and, according to quantum physics, she's right!

Dear Jean,
You should see the video, "Beatrice Wood: Mama of Dada". Very inspiring
and funny.......especially the quotes between interview clips.

Does anybody have the URL for Beatrice Wood's Home Page? I saw her
birthday interview (104) on CNN, or maybe Dateline, can't remember,
last week and they mentioned her page. I haven't been successful with a
search so far. I'd love to look at more of her work. She's
inspirational for all of us moving into the "antique" category.
Remember when she was rumored "passed on" last year and an assistant
reported that she had just purchased a new car and was feeling great?
Loved it!

I got the Beatrice Wood video, "Mama of Dada" and recommend it to all
who have any sensitivity to the wonder of 'Life". As she states, she is
happy to do what she wants to do and that is making pots. I just loaned
the video to our vice chancellor and told her it was about Life
It is a great movie celebrating one of the most interetesting lives of
our century. Imagine, she may get to see two changes of the centuries
and a change in the millennium.-wow

Does anybody have any recipes for Beatrice Wood glazes - especially the
earthenware 'volcanic' ones and 'inglaze lustres'.

Her phone number is 805-646-3381. Her address is 8560 Highway 150, Ojai,
Calif, 93023. You will likely have to deal with Ram Singh, her secretary,
who runs interference for Ms. Wood.

Yes, I have recipes for Beatrice Wood type in-glaze lustres. They were
historically all lead based. And the recipe isn't the secret, the firing
is.

You can get the lead out. All that is needed is a fluid cone 04 glaze,
some copper or silver carbonate and a kiln you can stuff tight and reduce
at a particular temperature on the way down. Still interested?

Diana, I tried to e-mail you directly but for some reason wasn't able to. I
am interested in getting the recipes for Beatrice's luster glazes. Also, what
exactly do you mean by fluid 04 glazes?

TIA,

Carol

I just heard that Beatrice has died. What sad news...but what a
wonderful life.

I think Beatrice will still be throwing clay in the hereafter! What a loveable
character that lady! Beato loved to hold court, particularly with the men.:-)
I remember on one of my visits to her saying "Beato, you remember my husband
Jim.", to which she replied, with that wonderful glint in her eye, "I always
remember the men."

I have some wonderful photos of Toshiko Takaezu trying to teach Beato to throw
when Beato was in her nineties. She would show up at the potters wheel in her
sari, silver Indian jewelry adorning every part of her, and an apron! Yet
with all the color and flourish, she was a very dedicated and disciplined
worker.

Once she invited us to a dinner she was giving in Toshiko's honor. What a fun
and eventful evening that turned out to be. She had the table layed out with
her beautiful luster ware. We drank wine from those large, lead laden
(probably), lustered goblets and enjoyed it immensely. Beato had made a pecan
pie for dessert but had obviously put too much or too little of something in.
She wound up with pecan sauce. So Vivika Heino, told her to serve it as a
sauce over ice cream, and it was wonderful. Then she burned the paneer.
Vivika, again to the rescue, telling us to add sugar to it because it gets rid
of the burnt taste! Vivika was not only a great pottery teacher and pot maker
but also a great cook!

So for Beato and Vivika, thanks for all the wonderful memories and love and
support!

Namaste!
June

Dear Clayarters !
I teaching ceramic to adult students here in Alsace, in the east of
France. They are courses for hobbyists. With other friends doing the
same as me, we created (we are benevolent) a little ceramic magazine (20
pages), with 6 issues a year. Our purpose is to enlarge the knowledge of
our students and create a friendly ling between the "ceramic lovers".
We are just three people encharged of redaction (no more interested...).
For the next issue, in the part about "Historical events or potters", I
would like to talk about Beatrice Wood. I think her personality and
destiny were great. I have some informations (that I found in the
spanish magazine "Revista Ceramica") about the main dates of her life,
but nearly nothing about her work as a potter.
Could somebody tell me more about the "grande dame", and even, if it is
possible to reproduce, some significant pictures of her work ?
I thank you a lot in advance,
Frangoise,
near from Strasbourg
