art vs(?) craft

ok, I know- we'ver gone over this a 1,000 times. Still, I have been working
on a little formula for defining these words that I'd like to share. Keep
in mind that these are "working" definitions.

ART- a method of self-expression in which concept determines materials.

CRAFT- a method of self-expression in which materials determine concept.

some of you may think that these definitions place craft in a "lower"
catagory than art, but i would argue that they are equals. These
definitions also place some works historically considered "art" in the
"craft" catagory- I am wholly willing to accept that is true.

discuss, and enjoy.

Okay, I've been keeping my mouth shut for a while, but I just had to put-
my $.02 in. And hopefully offend some people. ;) (At least I'm honest.)

The difference between art and craft? An artist is merely a pretentious
craftsperson. ;D To be honest, after reading both the art magazines and
the ceramics/crafts magazines, I'd rather hang out with craftspeople. I
find them to be much more down-to-earth and in touch with reality.
Especially ceramicists. pt.

I would agree wholeheartedly.

On a secondary note, I am considering getting an MFA in ceramics.
Anyone have an opinion on which schools are the best? I'm kinda
thinking Portland State U....

Given the first statement, why on earth are you contemplating
getting a MASTER of FINE ARTS degree? I will be truly fascinated to
find out what you think of this issue after a few years of academic
perspectives!!!
