Yhai, Clayartistas!? Tudo Bem?

Aqui na ilha coisas e' sempre otimo.

OK, I've got a couple minutes to spare while waiting for Roberto to arrive.

First, our first furnace is coming along and I expect to have o premeire festa
do Forno next week to celebrate. It's built from tijolos comum -- extruded
hollow sturctural clay tile -- tijolos refratario and fibrefrax I had shipped
down from Curitiba. The price was actually pretty decent, but the quality isn't
what I expected. It's kind of, well, brittle. Tudo bem. Anyway, this rig will be
used for fusing glass and is fired with weed burners. Next mission is to build a
melting furnace.

Last week we had the Festival do Mar at this disgusting place called Ilha
Shopping on the north end of the island. The festival, however, was very, very
cool. This place was colonized by portugese fishermen originally from the
Azores. Theri culture still persists in great measure -- people still make nets
by hand, they actually row their boats and so on -- which is not to say that
there aren't some more sophisticated operators around. The festival also
included an Opera about the history of the island that still gives me chills
when I think about it. Utterly fantastic. It also included an appearance by
Arturo Moreira Lima, an incredible composer/pianist who lives here.

Of interest to us here was an exposition by the local ceramists. The work ranged
from the highly conceptual to the vary traditional. The local clay doesn't lend
to thin work and it was interesting to see the various ways the potters deal
with this. The clay is high in MgO and fires rather low -- about cone 1-ish.
Much more and it melts down real fast. There's a group of potters who have built
a kiln south of here I want to go see. It is a variation on the "beehive" type
of kiln commonly used at the olarias that dot the landscape here. Wood is used
for fuel, however, I expect to see this change when the natural gas pipeline
gets here next year.

There was also a fellow from Porto Alegre who makes killer clayworking tools.
The prices were great and they were all built to last. I was impressed by the
range of textures they availed. If anyone wants more details on these contact me
directly.

In about a month there's going to be a Ceramic Congress down in Criciuma. I will
note here quite loudly that ART plays a role as important as industry. Indeed,
it is being called the ceramic art and industry congress. I'll forward more
details soon, but I'm looking forward to seeing some of my cronies and drinking
too much cachaca at least one night. All of the transnational machinery makers
will appear and there will be some 150 presentations given.

And with that...... vou concertar minha barca vela.....

Karl:
I love reading your missives from Brazil. Your descriptions of places are
wonderful. I also enjoy your intorduction of Portuguese into the clayart
discussion group. Clever fellow.
Thanks.

Cheers Karl,
I always enjoy reading your posts. I thank you for taking time to share part
of your adventure with us on clay art. You mention below "killer tools" I would
be interested in these tools. I'm in Calgary AB, Canada. The idea is very cool,
Maybe I would never use the tools or maybe they would replace
all of my traditional tools. I had the pleasure of watching Don Reitz throw very
large sectional pots in Edmonton last week. I'm all fired up now, shall
we say!

Take care and hope to hear from you soon.

Rod Wuetherick
in Calgary, Ab Canada where it really might be summer this time!
