all art is outside?

I thought *outsider art* was art created outside of mainstream art by
individuals not necessarily formally trained. After years of experience
inside our culture, it looks to me as though most art itself is outside
mainstream America and not integrated with daily life as it should be
(symbolic, spiritual, a connection with the past or future, or having an
actual function). Some pottery can be an exception because of its utilitarian
as well as asthetic use. Hopefully a large number of other artists out there
use non-traditional methods and materials in creating their work. This type
of creative exploration is essential to being an artist and is not just an
*outsider* activity.

I don't really want to start a nit-picking *word* thing with this post. Just
curious about the use of the term *outsider*in this particular case.
