I receive my Clayart messages via "digest" so messages arrive only once per
day. On Friday, September 26, in the list of topics was #15 - "Alabama Clay
Conference". However, in the body of information, there was no message
about this conference.

Could someone please forward the message to me if they received it? I
attended this conference last year and would like the information in the
hopes I can do so again. BTW, it was an excellent conference and I would
encourage others to consider attending.

Thanks very much for your help.

Also, would someone at Clayart let me know if I am not receiving all the
messages, I will go back to the regular way to receive them. Thanks.

registered from ten states and as far away as Washington State.

Thank you all for your interest. I am looking forward to a great

My husband and I signed up for the Alabama Clay Conference Feb 18 thru Feb 20.
We have reservations at the Jameson's Inn. Pete Pinnel & Patrick Horsley will
be giving demos and talking about their experience. Sounds great doesn't it???
Big bummer, my husband has now scheduled a business trip to Siberia during
that week!!!! ( let's don't even talk about Siberia in feb. my husband doesn't
own a coat because he thinks that if you ignore winter it will go away) So if
any non- smoking women out ther would like a free trip to the conference
please get back to me. If you're between Nashville and Florence Alabama I'll
even pick you up on the way down.

The 2000 Alabama Clay Conference will be held at The University
of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, March 2-5, 2000.

Presenters will be Vince Pitelka, John Baymore and Mel Jacobson.
There will be a pre-conference firing of the Alabama Wood Kiln
beginning on March 1, 2000.

This year's conference will be held in conjunction with Alabama
Crafts 2000, so there will be a lot of activities beyond those
presentations in ceramics. Some of the other events will include
iron pours, jewelry, blacksmithing, fiber and wood workshops, so if
the clay gets boring (which Vince, Mel and John have promised will
never happen) you can move to other events, exhibitions and
workshops.

The Alabama Clay Conference has a long history as an
outstanding regional clay experience. I am looking forward to
seeing many of you in March.

Alabama clay Conference. She is recovering from surgery and will be getting
the applications out in the next couple of weeks or so. We should all have

Presenters include:

John Baymore (Rumor has it that John and Mel are doing something
cooperative......hmmmmmmm)

I have attended Bruce Baker's booth design seminar here in NH a while back

I have just returned from the "Alabama Clay Conference" and have nothing
but rave reviews for all involved. A special "thank you" is in order for
Vince Pitelka, John Baymore and Mel Jacobson who did a such a wonderful job
of sharing their immense knowledge and talent with the group. I find myself
creatively rejuvenated.

If you live anywhere in the region of the U.S. and you don't attend this
annual event you are really cheating yourself out of a great time.

I'll second that! It's a terrific deal in every way, and I'm kicking
myself that I didn't start going sooner. Vince, John and mel were terrific
presenters, and I learned all manner of useful and stimulating stuff-- and
I'm sure they learned a bit from the hundred or so potters who were there.
For example, in the course of Vince's excellent slide show of ancient and
tribal pottery, he identified a Peruvian effigy jar as a watermelon with
eyes. Later on I pointed out to him that it looked a good bit like a
guinea pig, which is a domestic animal in the Andean highlands even today.
And Vince... once I got home, I realized that they don't grow watermelons
in the highlands-- too cold.

Financially, it's a great deal-- I don't know how they can do it. For
$55.00, we got 4 days of programming, we were fed two dinners, a good
lunch, and a really choice set of viands after a gallery opening. One of
the rewarding aspects of the conference was Bruce Baker, who spoke on
slides, selling, and booth design. I bought the tape, something I almost
never do.

I met a bunch of nice people, and renewed acquaintances with some folks I
hadn't seen in 20 years. I really enjoyed assisting Merrie a little with
the wood-firing-- brought back all sorts of pleasant memories, and she's a
very entertaining person to talk to, as well as a talented potter.

I'd like to especially thank Lowell Baker, who did everything possible to
make our time there pleasant. He put up with a lot of nonsense, I'm sure,
but I never saw him get bad-tempered, and I surely would have in his place.

Next year in Montgomery!

Hi y'all. Settled back into New Hampshire.... and adjusting to going back
to winter from summer=21

I just wanted to say how nice it was to meet so many CLAYART-ERS at the
Alabama Clay Conference who I had known only as an email address. Putting
faces and personalities with the written names and posts is always fun.

The energy level of the participants at the conference was wonderful to
experience........... ceramics is certainly alive and well in Alabama and
the surrounding area=21 What a great group of people were in
attendance.............. some great sharing was going on in all directions
at once. The work in the Alabama exhibition (all media) was really great.

I too have to say that the conference appears to be a real bargain and
worth far more than the tuition. Reminds me of NCECA or SuperMud way back
when they were much smaller and more personal in scope. If you live
anywhere near the conference site, do yourself a favor and attend it at
least once.

The pre-conference woodfiring did have some really nice pots come out.
CJ's woodfire slip resist that Lowell mentions is a really nice effect.
Try it. I know I will......... I want to see if it was a one time blessing
or a reliable treatment. BTW....... that is called R and D............ rip
off and duplicate (g). Thanks CJ=21=21=21=21=21

I gotta say that I learned a lot from both mel and Vince by having the
opportunity to work with them. Consumate professionals, both.
And Lowell was a GREAT host=21 If you are considering a school....... check
out his program.

My thanks to all involved for making it a great time.

I am currently spending my spring break at my dad's place in Berkeley,
helping him prepare to move his life to my sister's place in Altadena. I
have been so busy over the past few weeks, that I have had no opportunity to
compose a post about the conference. But I am inspired by the things others
have said. I had a wonderful time there. It is indeed a great group of
people, and Lowell Baker and Georgine Clarke did an excellent job organizing
the conference. Lowell has a great clay facility there at the University of
Alabama, with an excellent sculpture facility right next door, and a large
outdoor kiln area where he has his infamous sawdust-fired two-chamber
flat-top kiln. Remarkably, it seemed to work very well despite the flat
roofs. (Sorry, flattoppers, I couldn't resist that.)

The exhibition "Craft is a Verb", from the permanent collection of the
American Craft Museum, was quite stunning, and as it travels around the
country you should all try to see it.

It was a great pleasure sharing the limelight at this conference with Mel
and John Baymore. We seemed to work well together, and every time I work
with Mel I learn new information. I don't know if I have every encountered
anyone else in academia who can entertain a crowd the way Mel does. They
have a great time, and before they know it they have learned a new batch of
useful information. No wonder he was/is such a great teacher.

John is a continual font of useful and interesting information. His slides
of his work, his studio and his noborigama were very impressive. He is a
very fine potter and teacher, and his philosophy and ethic of life and
pottery seems to flow with graceful and harmonious continuity. As many of
you know, he teaches workshops every year in his own studio. His workshops
culminate in a woodfiring in his noborigama, and they sound fascinating. I
may take one myself one of these years.

One more high point of my visit to Alabama was the Dreamland Barbecue on the
outer fringes of Tuscaloosa. They serve sodas, beer, pork ribs, and white
bread. No slaw, no beans, no potato salad, don't ask. All their meat is on
the bone. No pulled pork, no chicken, no beef, no catfish. But what they
do serve is the best I have had. I bought several quarts of their sauce,
and at the risk of permanent banishment from Alabama, I must admit to having
it on Boca Burgers the other night. It was delicious.

Best wishes -

I have heard from several claybuds who are planning to attend the Alabama
Clay Conference this weekend. I am arranging for a group of us to get
together. If anyone else is interested in joining us, please send me a note
off list right away, or call.

If you make a last minute plan to attend and want to meet up with
Clayarters, I will be staying at the McClelland Inn. (Phone: 256-820-3144)
I will check for messages there and if they have a message board at the
conference, I will look there, too. It looks like the best time for us to
get together is Friday evening for dinner.

I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone at the conference!

Hi all.

I just returned from the Alabama Clay Conference.  Tena Payne did an INCREDIBLE job of organizing it!   On behalf of all us potters, I thank you.

Around 300 attended.  There were folks from Alabama (obviously), Georgia, Mississippi.   I 'm sure there were folks from other states as well. The workshops were very good.  I attended Lowell Baker's and Scott Myer's kiln building workshop and Peter King's architectural workshop (the kilns and Peter's form to be donated to Spain High School ).  There were breakout workshops  -- one dealing with repetitive motion/stress injuries and one by Olympic on electric kiln repair.  I learned a lot in each.  I'm sure those of you who attended the Archie Pike, Rosette Gault and Barbara Becker Simon workshops will report on those.  The photography presentation was also very informative.  AND ...  CYNTHIA BRINGLE was our keynote speaker.  What a treat!!!

Thanks so much all who worked on that Conference,  including Tena, Georgine Clarke and the Alabama Craft Council.       Celeste Sabel, Montgomery, AL

pressure, just loads of information thats almost more
than a brain can stand.

SO... Who ever it is this time around, please note
that there are now two of us in Alabama asking the
same questions. I am sure we could just dig it up if
we worked at it but its much better to market it,
especially to clayarters because we read alot and get
smarter every day. Hmmm, I googled it and
found past events but am still looking as I write for
my in-depth information. Date, time, place and who's
coming?

Subject: Re: Alabama Clay Conference dates

Any clue as to where they will have this? We would
have liked to go
last
year but only hear about it after it was all over. It
seems advertising
is
not their strong point.

Hi Dan,

Last year it went up from $75 to $85, and is still a heck of a great deal!
Not only are the presenters top rate, they also feed you several wonderful
meals and have various evening activities clay and sometimes non-clay
related. Last year they featured films from the Alabama Film Festival as a
bonus treat. Hope to see you there. I live in Virgina now, but instead of
going home to Atlanta every year for the Xmas Holiday, I go to this
conference instead. Somehow I just manage to skip Ga, go straight to
Alabama, and have my parents come from Atlanta and stay with me in the hotel
during the conference. They get to see me, I have one of the best weekends
of the year....and everyone's happy:)

Look be patient and be ready to play the game-- wait until the conference is
listed in Ceramics Monthly then call and register. It is just the process.
The registration does come out late. If you do not hear anything by late
January then I would start calling. Scott Meyer at Montevallo of Georgine
Clark at the Alabama State Art Council. Be patient.

My registration form came yesterday. It contains very
little helpful information such as conference
accommodations etc. Not too sure what is happening as
it was posted from Florence, Alabama instead of the
Craft Council in Montgomery. I too hope that the web
site will become interactive soon. I could not get
into it either.

We have much enjoyed the clay conference in past years but this year has
little for functional potters so we will pass. Hope to go next year when it
is in Huntsville, about a 20 min drive and the focus will be back on
functional pottery.
