Jeff:

Saw your note on air compressors and just wanted to offer Nancy the
web address of I-R air compressors http://www.air.ingersoll-rand.com.
The site doesn't have prices, but it does have a zip code search for
your nearest distributor and a list of used equipment.

Thank you Larry, for explaining that. As I said, I don't know much of
anything about compressors and I was hoping someone like you would
elucidate. I'm glad I didn't let myself fall for the offer.

That compressor will work to fill a low tire or basketball, but it is WAAAY
to small for any spraying except for an airbrush. Even then it will run
continuously, loudly and hot. A headache in a box.

To spray a even coat of any finish (glaze in our case), you need a
compressor with a tank that is large enough to dampen out the pulse from th=
e
pump. The larger tank will also allow the person spraying to keep spraying
longer before draining the tanks pressure. Forcing you to stop working unti=
l
the pressure recovers.

Our glazes are not as fussy as paints are but a constant pressure is a must=
.
A pressure regulator is a requirement - I don't see one with this kit so yo=
u
will need to buy one - cost is around $30.

The bigger a compressor tank is - the less amount of time the pump has to
run. The smaller a pump is, the faster it will run - the faster it runs, th=
e
quicker it will wear out. A small pump like this just might be worn out in =
a
couple glaze sessions.

If you want some suggestions about what to look for, here goes;

Minimum 30 gallon tank, I use a 60 gallon. I think high speed oil-less
compressors are a waste of money. Buy a two cylinder compressor pump - the
cast iron pumps will outlast the aluminum pumps by a big range - mine is 15
years old. Make sure you have oil on hand and check the oil level often. Bu=
y
a good pressure regulator, price is a indicator. A 1/4" rubber air hose has
very good flexibility and will be less tiring during a long glaze session.

I'm very happy to talk about spray guns if this heads that way.

In view of the current discussion about spraying glaze and air
compressors, I just wanted to note that there is -- NOW, 3:50 p.m.
EDT, USA -- a Campbell Hausfeld small 100 PSI air compressor available
for $46 under Amazon "Today's Deals." This will expire in just over an
hour, so if anyone is interested, take a look.

I don't know much about air compressors, but would be interested in
hearing opinions of the pros on the list.

I have this air compressor and like it. I only spray underglazes and clear=
=3D
glaze with an inexpensive airbrush and it works just fine. Yes=3D2C it is=
l=3D
oud and comes on often=3D2C but I could not justify spending more money on =
a =3D
compressor since I am only a hobbiest potter. The noise you will get used =
=3D
to since you will be using it outside anyway. As for vibrations I can't fi=
=3D
gure out what problem is. The hose is long and dampens out all vibrations=
=3D
. It is not an issue. One problem is that it comes with a semi-rigid coil=
=3D
ed air hose that is terrible. I replaced it with a much better flexible ho=
=3D
se from Lowe's.

=3D20

I would say that if you can afford a better compressor buy it. But for occ=
=3D
asional work on a small scale this little compressor is just fine.
