Hi. We want to prepare a mixture of "adobe"to seal the outside of my
woodburning kiln. The exterior is hardbrick...and I have 2 recipes and
wondered if anyone recommends anything else. The kiln is under cover so
won't get wet. When built we sealed the arch with : 4-5 parts sand, 1 part
Portland cement, and chopped straw. The other recipe I've found is 7 parts
clay, 1 part portland. Anyone?
Thanks! Joan...riverrun@newnorth.net

Joan--At Penland when their new gas kiln wouldn't reduce properly, Warren
MacKenzie mixed up a slurry of I think just sand and fireclay--a p green I
think--and we applied it with a broom. It worked great--the kiln
immediately went into reduction. Thanks for your note about Ireland--I'll
let you know the highlights when we come back.

Later...Dave

Hullo Joan,
We make our Kilns with a covering of 2 parts clay,1 part sand,1 part
chopped straw. The same mix with the addition of half to 1 part of dung
makes a surprisingly strong and weatherproof mix and was used on the
outside of wattle and daub houses. As you are covering a brick structure
and don't want shrinkage, I suggest equal parts of clay and sand rather
than 2 to 1. This mix has the advantage of being cheap (scrap clay and
builder's sand),easily removeable for repairs, and can be re-used again
and again. You can only use cement once!!
